Village News - July

Vandalism

Jackie Biggins and her family have been very distressed recently by the vandalism that has happened in the churchyard.  A vase of flowers, bought for Fathers' Day, was smashed and the flowers thrown around.  I'm sure that everyone will agree that this is totally unacceptable and that graves in our village should be treated with respect.  The churchyard should not be used as a playground but as the sacred place of peace that it is intended to be.  The police have been informed.

Electricity Supply

We are due to have some serious work to our electricity supply this month and as a result the mains power will be off from 2nd July for around 16 days and will be replaced by a generator to ensure that we do have electricity.

Village Fun Day - Sunday, July 13th, 2-5pm

Please come along and join the fun.  There are races and games, 5-a-side football, cake stalls, refreshments, all down on the sports field.  It's always an enjoyable, sociable day, much enjoyed by everyone.

Degree Success

Congratulations to Rachel Abbott who gained a 2:1 Degree in French from Lancaster University!

Church Services (From Beryl Lowe)

There was a big congregation for Evensong on 15th June, a good time was had by all.  The new hangings made by Judith Wilson are a very special gift and we thank her for them and hope everyone will see them sometime soon.  Evensong in July will be on Sunday 20th.

An important date for your diary is Sunday, 3rd August when Michael Sinclair will have his Farewell Service at Settrington at 10.30am followed by a Hog Roast Picnic Party at Langton.  Everyone will be welcome.

The Sports Pavilion

You might have noticed work going on to repair the sports pavilion during the summer.  The Sports Committee would like to thank Kevin Benton and other helpers who have spent many hours working on this.  The plan is to make the pavilion serviceable for the next 4-5 years, while planning its replacement.

Protect your property

Safer Ryedale are running a campaign to advise people on how best to protect their property in garden sheds and outhouses this summer.  A pack offering advice and free packet of seeds and a free pen for marking your property with your postcode is available from Yates Garden Centre and Malton Library.  For more details contact Safer Ryedale on tel 600666 or at www.ryesafe.org.

Mobile Library

This month the library van will call outside the church hall on Thursday 10th and 31st July between 1.05pm and 1.30pm.

Heating Oil Thefts

Heating oil has been stolen from a tank in the village.  It has probably been taken in small amounts, so please be aware of how much oil you have on a regular basis.  The police are aware of the incidents.

Trip to Liverpool (From Judith Wilson)

On Sunday 8th June a party of fourteen left Burythorpe for Liverpool.  The weather was lovely and we went in three cars and arrived in Liverpool after a bit of a hold up at about 12.15pm.  Some of the party went around the Albert Docks, others went straight to the Cathedral, where we all met Sarah Jones (the Bishop of Liverpool's wife) at 2pm.  We were then given a conducted tour around the incredible Cathedral, which is not as old as people think.  It was only started in 1904, but was not finished until 1978, making it younger than the Catholic Cathedral which was started in 1962 and finished in 1967.

After that we drove to the Bishop's Lodge where we were met by Sarah and James.  We went round their fabulous garden and Sarah told us some funny stories that and happened when they were entertaining guests.  Because the weather was so lovely, we had tea in the garden.  (Sarah's chocolate cake is to die for!)

We left for home about 5.30pm having thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  Many thanks to James and Sarah for their hospitality.

The Burythorpe Bash - a great success!

Many thanks to everyone who supported the Burythorpe Bash, held in May.  It was a great evening, and helped raise around £1400 for the Sports Committee.  You may have noticed the new mower, purchased with funds raised at this and other recent events, which has helped keep the sports field looking better than it has for many years.

Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association

This month's meeting will be held on Thursday 10th July at 7.30pm.  Sophie from Malton Relish will be coming to demonstrate a variety of foods for the picnic season and there will be samples to try at the end.  All welcome.  There will be no meeting in August.

Churchyard

Thank you for raking done in June.  July will be a lighter month with less grass to be cut but early in August we shall need all the help we can muster after a BIG CUT!!  So please be ready for that.

Jackie Biggins has a petrol strimmer for sale, open to offers.  Tel 658116 for more details.
