All Saints Church is one of eight churches in the Parish of West Buckrose. The Reverend Michael Sinclair is the vicar for all eight churches. He is helped by the Reverend Norman Lewis, a retired priest who lives in Kirby Misperton.
Because the vicar has eight villages to look after, there is no set pattern of services. There is a parish service for all villages on the first and fifth Sundays each month and also on major Church Festival days. When there is no parish service, Burythorpe normally has a Holy Communion at 9am on the second Sunday of each month and Evensong on the third Sunday at 6pm. Times and places of services can be seen on the Noticeboard at the end of the lane leading to the church and on the noticeboard in the church porch.
We are sad to announce that the Rev'd Michael Sinclair will be retiring on 4th August this year. More will be said about this and how a replacement is to be found later on.
The Parish Garden fete will be held at Witham Cottage on Saturday 7th June. Burythorpe will be running a tombola stall and prizes will be welcome. Please deliver these to Mrs Judith Wilson at Hollybank, Main Street, Burythorpe by 4th June.
Judith Wilson has made and presented some magnificent falls for the pulpit and lectern and these will blessed at Evensong on Sunday June 15th. Do please try and join us then.
The major fund raising event this year will be a sponsored walk on Saturday 6th September. Details will be published later.
There is an urgent need to repair the stained glass east window and we shall be running an appeal this summer to raise money for this.
Often referred to as "The Church on the Hill" the building is a well known landmark. The site is an old one and signs of Roman occupation dating from the 3rd Century AD have been found. The present church was built in 1865 on the same site as the old church which was pulled down. Much work has been done in recent years. The bell tower was repaired in 1983, the South facing roofs re-slated, the organ completely restored and electricity installed. The old gas lights were initially kept but in 2003 electric lights were put in because the gas lamps were getting difficult to maintain.
The font is from the previous building. The stained glass is Victorian but it is thought that the octofoil and ringfoil smaller windows may have been incorporated from the earlier church. The ancient chalice, or communion cup, dated 1568 is used only on major occasions, but there is a framed picture and details in the church. A fuller history can be seen on the table just inside the church door.
